Paris -- Oct 19
We have to be up early so we can be in the Place d'Italie for our wine tour of Burgundy. It's still dark when we hit the metro. We get worried we might not get there by 8am but turns out we are the first, there even before our guide. We are joined by Luiz, our sommelier, a family of 3 from Texas and Oregon and Costa Rica, and a newly married pair who can't keep their hands off each other. We get in the van and start our 1 1/2 hour drive to Chablis. We stop at a bakery in Chablis and Luiz gets us all a local cheese bread called le gougère to try. Then we stop at Severin and get a good introduction to Chablis and several tastings. Then we drive into Burgundy and Luiz stops at a good view point where we look out over the villages and vineyards. It's a nice day and the scenery is beautiful. Our next stop is a winery where we get a charcuterie lunch and taste their wines at the same time. Nothing special here but lunch is good although a bit sparse perhaps. Our last stop is in the village of Saint-Bris-le-Vineux and the Domaine Bersan winery. The host here is a very interesting woman who grew up in the village and knows a lot about this winery. There is a very old cellar downstairs that is fun to see. Time to drive back to Paris. We get back much sooner than we expected. We hear from Greg and Mary that they are still under the weather so it is time to metro back home. We head home but Ryan stays on for another stop and heads back to YSL so he can get his tax form. It turns out to be good for $45 so worth the effort for him.
