Paris -- Oct 21
We are off to Versailles. We pick up some sandwiches before we head out. Ryan has it all routed and we get to the station to catch the C train to Versailles but there is no one there and it appears that the train isn't running. I finally stop some nice Metro workers who tell us how to reroute ourselves to get to Versailles. So we backtrack a bit, get on another train, eat our sandwiches on the nice two-story train and are in Versailles around 12:30 p.m. It's maybe a 10 minute walk to the palace and soon we are inside. We have downloaded the online audio guide which is very helpful.
We start out touring the state apartments which includes the rooms of the Dauphin and Louis XV's daughters, the Hall of Mirrors, and the King's rooms and many more rooms which start to blend together. The palace is so much less populated than the last time we were here. It is even possible to move around in the Hall of Mirrors! After a few hours we head out to see a bit of the gardens. The weather has been nice and we walk to see a couple of fountains.
Then we are really ready to head back. We chance that the other train will be running again since it is closer to the palace and we are in luck. So we catch that one back. Home to regroup, spend the last of our euros and find a spot for our last dinner.
I come up with a couple of choices and we pick a small bistro called Terrasse Bistrot "Le Trois-Quart." It is small and charming and the waitress is equally charming. Steve has a mushroom dish to start and I have escargot. I misunderstand the waitress and Ryan gets a beet carpaccio dish. It is actually very tasty but not his choice of course. Our mains are a steak for Ryan with an au poivre sauce (which he loves) and a goat cheese sauce, a veal cutlet with lemon for me, and a chicken forestiere for Steve. All tasty but not the best meal of our trip. We end with a creme brulee. Still a charming bistro for our last meal in Paris. Home to pack up as the trip is winding down.
